Job Description
The English department invites applications for a full-time, temporary faculty position for the 2024-2025 academic year. We seek a colleague with a vision to expand the potential of our professional writing concentration through an emphasis on the importance of multimodal storytelling and the development of a social justice component. This position is part of a Salem State initiative to help advance our professional writing concentration and may be reappointed for up to two additional years subject to available funding. With continued growth of the professional writing concentration, it is expected there will be employment growth with the addition of tenure track lines in the department.
The successful candidate will coordinate the English department’s professional writing concentration and teach within the program. Coordination of the professional writing concentration includes overseeing Red Skies Magazine, our campus ezine that covers university events and issues and whose student staff comes from all departments in the university. The successful candidate will also coordinate internships in partnership with our Center for Civic Engagement.
Teaching assignments will vary based upon the expertise of the candidate and programmatic needs, but may include Introduction to Professional Writing, Editing for Publication, Writing in the Workplace, Literary Journalism, Seminar in Modern Publishing, Digital Writing, and/or a portfolio capstone course.

Candidates are required to perform duties in accordance with the MSCA contract. Duties include teaching, advising, and contributions to continuously improve the department and university. The standard teaching load is 12 credit hours per semester. The position is subject to available funding.
Required Qualifications:
- MFA or PhD in English with expertise in Professional Writing, Public Writing, and/or Writing for Digital Media
- Demonstrated excellence in teaching
- Scholarship, master’s thesis, or dissertation related professional writing, business writing, technical writing, digital writing, and/or multimedia storytelling
Preferred Qualifications:
- Commitment to anti-racist, culturally responsive teaching
- Experience with coordinating a student publication
- Experience with teaching multimodal writing and writing for new media
- Experience with mentoring student interns
